- 2012 Annual Conference assisted place
There will be at least one assisted place at the 40th Annual Conference of the European Group (5-9 September 2012 in Nicosia, Cyprus). The first assisted place is named in honour of the late Anna Eggert, who died earlier this year. Anna was involved in two main issues: reproductive rights and women's empowerment. She also had a passion for understanding how fascism and racism could take hold of a society.
Depending on the nature of applications, we would be looking to bestow the assisted place on one person who meets some / all of the below criteria:
* Do not have a tenured position in academia or have no means of providing alternative means of support through employment schemes.
* An MA / PhD student / part time member of staff who is ineligible for university department/school/faculty funding to attend conferences.
* Are confronted with other significant difficulties which would merit special support to attend the conference.
* Currently undertaking research or activism in an area that reflects the work of Anna Eggert.
* Planning to deliver a paper at the conference on a theme that reflects the work of Anna Eggert.
The deadline for applications is the 28th February 2012. Those wishing to apply should write a 150-300 word statement in support of their application. A copy of the conference paper abstract should also be included in the submission. The conference place is free and the European Group will help support travel and accommodation up to £250 for the assisted place. If you would like further information please contact: David Scott dscott@uclan.ac.uk.

- European Group statement in support of striking lecturers and students in Greece
In October 2011 the European Group issued a statement in support of striking workers and students at the University of Aegean in Mytilene, Greece, which hosted the Group's 2010 Annual Conference. Although the statement refers only to the University of the Aegean, the Group supports the magnificent wave of protests, occupations and rallies taking place across Greece and beyond in opposition to public sector cuts:
"The members of the European Group for the study of Deviance and Social Control would like to express their support to all comrades, students and professors participating in the strike, rallies and occupations organised in Mytilene in the last three weeks. We believe that you are making a principled and practical stand against unjust government policies. We abhor the parasitic financial speculation which continues to fuel and feed off this crisis, and the attempts of European Governments, with the support of the US Treasury, to impose misery upon the Greek people as 'a price worth paying' to bolster the international neo-liberal project. As a pan-European organisation, we emphasise that these Governments do not act in our name. We therefore recognise the significance of the Mytilenians ongoing struggle and offer you our full support."

- European Group issue statement in support of family of Ian Tomlinson
At the 2010 conference the group discussed the decision in the UK not to prosecute the police officer responsible for the death of Ian Tomlinson at the G20 protests in April 2009. Below is the ‘European Group Statement in support of Ian Tomlinson’, drafted prior to the conference by Joe Sim:
"As members of the European Group for the Study of Deviance and Social Control we unequivocally condemn the decision by the Crown Prosecution Service not to bring charges against the police officer involved in the death of Ian Tomlinson at the G20 protests. This pronouncement emphasises a wider unwillingness to hold the Police Service to account and a failure to fully acknowledge responsibility for the harmful actions of individual officers. We call upon the British government to institute a full, independent inquiry into how this decision was arrived at. We also offer our full support to the family of Ian Tomlinson in their desire to see justice done."
